USWNT one game away from Olympic gold

Missed penalty leads to loss

Defeat by Norway ends hopes of defending title

The US Women's National Team fell just short of a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics, suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Norway in the final. The match was decided by a controversial penalty shootout, with Norway winning 4-3. The USWNT had been the favorite to win the gold medal, having won the previous two Olympic tournaments. However, Norway proved to be too strong on the day, and the USWNT was forced to settle for silver.

The USWNT finished the tournament with a record of 4-1-2, including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the group stage. However, the team was unable to find its form in the final, and Norway took advantage of a missed penalty by Mia Hamm to win the shootout. The loss was a major disappointment for the USWNT, but the team will have a chance to redeem itself at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
